THE principal of the north Belfast school attended by murdered teenager Thomas Devlin last night said he was overwhelmed by the response to a special memorial fund which has been set up.

Belfast Royal Academy (BRA) launched the initiative last week in the hope of bringing in enough funds to establish either a foundation or scholarship in memory of the 15-year-old.

"It's impossible for us to put a figure on how much has been brought in so far but it's quite a lot. The response has been overwhelming," he said.

Mr Young has kept in close contact with Thomas's parents, Jim Devlin and Penny Holloway, since the killing and said that they will be consulted on how the money is used.

"What we do with it depends entirely on how much is raised but possibilities could include a foundation or scholarship in Thomas' name. The fund might be used to help with pupils' uniform or school trip costs or may be linked in some way to Thomas' two biggest interests - music and computing. We feel it's important his family and friends have a say."
