WINNIPEG -- In an extraordinary show of forgiveness, the parents of two young Sudanese friends who were killed on the weekend -- one by his buddy, the other by police -- are planning a joint funeral.
When police were called to a fight at an apartment Friday night, they burst in and found Zunga Bashir, 24, on top of James David, 28, plunging a knife into him.
"Our two families are great friends," said David's stepmother, Catherine Hakim, the manager of a community health centre in Ottawa. "You do not need to pay bad things with bad things. That just creates more problems."
She only wishes she could know why it happened. "If (Bashir) hadn't been shot to death I could've asked him, 'what would James have done to deserve to be stabbed?' " she said.
